On Friday the 15th and Saturday 16th May I took part in a woodcarving workshop with Robert Koenig. I had a little experience in woodwork as my grandfather gave me a small lathe, which I have not used now in many years. Before new year I took an woodcarving course with Ivor Gould, introducing me to the chisels, sharpening tools and working in low relief. Images of the work will be added to 'the office' on this site but for now they can be viewed at the following link. http://www.contemporaryjerseyartists.com/node/212 The work was made over two days and I am entirely satisfied with the results. The first figure has been carved into sweet chestnut where I took my lead for the profile and features from fantastic curves in the wood grain. The shape of the nose dictated the form and from here a face emerged easily. The second figure is still in progress and is being carved from a chunk of lime from the Governor's house. It was diseased when cut down and has a two distinct colours. The wood is still wet but very easy to work. It is more challenging because I have not found a natural path into carving the face but I know this will evolve.
