Local Arts Projection Project

In December I took part in this project projecting some of my photography experiments onto a wall near Bean Around the World Coffee Shop, Burrard St, St Helier. Other local artist’s work was also projected onto a building opposite the Bean around the world coffee shop during the late night shopping period beginning Thursday 2nd December. Shelby Parker is helping organise the showings with the Arts Trust as part of studies at Highlands College of Art and Design on a projection project. Some of ...

New Toys.

I finally committed to buying myself a new toy. It isn't the flashiest camera on the market but I was seduced by the lovely design, slightly retro in appearance and far removed from the non descript pink and silver slithers of metal that are the alternative. I have not owned a digital camera since the winter snow of 2006 and early 2007. I have had access to photography but I thought it was time I had something of my own to play with. A camera that I didn't need to ask permission for of to retur...

Greetings.

During the summer I entered a local competition to produce greetings cards that will be sold on line through a local Design company. The competition prompted me to work to a deadline and produce work under a brief, rather than for my own needs. In September I found out that the IdeaWorks had selected me as their overall winner. In return for my designs I would gain two weeks work experience and the chance to sell my work over the website. I was flattered and excited by the potential of the ne...

Summer Sun.

This summer has been long and mildly productive. Hampered by fatigue and nausea and employment, I've not done as much as I had intended to but this can't be helped and I feel little guilt. I have retuned to making collages, some good, some bad. Hand in hand with the creativity is an almighty mess that occupied my little studio as I tore and shredded paper. I found some amazing embroidery transfers in charity shop sale costing just £1 and these have formed the basis of many pieces as they la...

Spanish Exchange.

In 2005 I studied in Finland, making an amazing group of Erasmus friends in our mutual cultural dislocations. Laura, a Spanish Scientist, recently contacted me with images of her new home in Madrid. I was flattered to see that she had kept some drypoints and silkscreens from my time in Turku. Laura had bought one or two pieces of my work when I held an exhibition near the end of my printmaking exchange. We continue to post letters, cards and e-mails and I even visited her in the north of Spa...

Egg Art.

I was recently asked to decorate an ostrich egg for a local exhibition. The aim is to auction the eggs so that they might raise money for the Side by Side charity. The pressure to decorate such a perfect structure caused me much torment. Many of my maquettes seemed to be more successful due to the smaller scale. I revisited eggs collected from my uncle's organic farm and had endless amounts of joy trying to pierce them, stitch back together and reassemble strange interiors and exteriors. The ...

Updated Site

Many thanks to my very talented web designer who has now altered the site for me without changing the appearance of it at all. I can now update the pages on my own and add to the growing list of exhibitions which I am yet to document. Many new images, which I have been hoarding since 2008, need to be uploaded over the next few days, or when I pause to catch my breath... ...

..and then, 2010...

I can hardly believe it is 2010 already and I have had such limited internet access since moving house in the Autumn of last year. A little update on recent activities and artistic plans for the future... In November I took part in an exhibition called 'The Red Dot Sale' where I was abel to exhibit a series of prints not shown before in Jersey. It was a luxury to get art work framed, en mass, and share an exhibition space with many local artists I admire. The exhibition was for one night ...

Plinth Art, Accountability and Responsibility.

A plinth is a structure which brings a selected item to the the attention of the the human world. It isolates it from the everyday space around it, providing spatial boundaries, elevates it to eye level or above. A plinth can also create art status and confirm scale. The recent CJA exhibition on Hillgrove Street, St Helier, Jersey, transformed a series of metal traffic bollards into plinths for the two day show. Mounted, only by gravity, on these narrow platforms we placed an array of mu...

Street Art in the summer rain.

Rain delayed artistic activity today as we put up the 'Street Art' exhibition which saw the launch of the Contemporary Jersey Arts website. Although we were slightly disapointed by the downpour we were abel to put the work up, cover it and take a coffee in Cafe Society whilst the sky emptied itself in mid July. Whilst sipping on our mochas, espressos and other caffeinated delights, the manager spoke of his concerns for the street. "It usually looks like a back entrance which is a shame becau...
